Book printing cost depends on your specification more than on the printer. Two books with the same page count can differ several times in price once quantity, paper and binding change.
The seven cost drivers
- Quantity. Larger runs spread setup cost across more copies, so cost per copy falls.
- Page count. More pages mean more paper and more printing.
- Trim size. Bigger pages use more paper.
- Interior colour. Full colour costs much more per page than black and white.
- Paper. Weight and type change both cost and feel.
- Binding. Perfect-bound paperback is lower cost; hardcover costs more; wire-o and saddle stitch sit in between for suitable books.
- Cover finish. Lamination, spot UV and foil each add cost.
Delivery is the eighth item and is easy to forget. Weight and distance matter for large orders.
Comparing quotes properly
Ask every printer to quote exactly the same specification. Compare:
- Cost per copy and total cost.
- Whether proofs and a sample are included.
- Delivery charges and taxes.
- The schedule, and what happens if it slips.
